This summer, we found ourselves in Rock Falls, Sterling, and Dixon, Illinois—a corner of the Midwest that might not be on everyone's radar but holds a special place in our hearts. We were visiting family and friends, but in between catching up, we managed to carve out time to explore and soak in the charm of these towns. And let me tell you, they did not disappoint!
A Taste of Rock Falls
Our culinary journey kicked off at the Rock Falls Farmers Market, a lively event full of local vendors selling everything from fresh produce to handcrafted goods. It was the perfect way to start our day, enjoying the vibrant community atmosphere and snagging some farm-fresh goodies to take back to Louise, our RV.
For lunch, we stopped by Angelo's Pizza, a beloved local spot that had us hooked with its inventive menu. While their classic pepperoni pizza was everything you’d hope for in a small-town pizzeria—comforting, cheesy, and delicious—the true standout was their mac and cheese pizza. Yes, you read that right. Picture a golden, creamy mac and cheese baked onto a perfectly crispy pizza crust. It’s as indulgent and satisfying as it sounds, and we couldn’t get enough. Angelo’s knows how to deliver on flavor and creativity, making it a must-visit spot.
Dinner took us to the famous Candlelight Inn, home of the original Chicken George. If you've never tried it, think tender, golden-fried chicken strips paired with a dreamy dipping sauce that keeps locals and visitors coming back for more. This place is a regional icon, and for good reason!
The Highlight: Taco Liz
While the food scene was impressive overall, the real showstopper was Taco Liz. If you haven't heard of her yet, she's a local legend who makes the most incredible homemade tacos I’ve ever tasted. These aren’t just tacos—they're a culinary experience. The tortillas were soft and warm, the meat was seasoned to perfection, and the toppings were so fresh they practically burst with flavor. Every bite felt like a love letter to authentic, home-cooked Mexican cuisine. If you ever find yourself in Rock Falls, tracking down Taco Liz is an absolute must. Trust me, you'll thank me later!
Exploring History and Nature
Rock Falls, Sterling, and Dixon also offer a surprising amount of history and natural beauty. One of our favorite activities was walking across the Rock Falls Dam into downtown Sterling. The views of the Rock River were stunning, and the peacefulness of the area made it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll.
On the other side, we admired the Dillon Home Museum, a beautifully preserved Italianate mansion that gives a glimpse into the life of one of Sterling’s prominent families. The grounds are equally picturesque, making it a lovely stop for history buffs and casual visitors alike.
We also visited an old boat lock near the river, a fascinating piece of engineering that hints at the area's rich industrial past. Standing there, it was easy to imagine a time when the waterways buzzed with activity, connecting the region to the broader world.
What We Missed (but Won’t Next Time)
Although we packed a lot into our trip, we couldn’t quite make it to Ronald Reagan’s Childhood Home in Dixon. As a history lover, I’m itching to explore this National Historic Site on our next visit. It’s one more reason to return to this gem of a region.
More Than Meets the Eye
When we first arrived, we weren’t sure how much there would be to see and do in Rock Falls, Sterling, and Dixon. But as we explored, we discovered a treasure trove of experiences—delicious food, rich history, and warm, welcoming communities. Whether you’re passing through or looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination, these towns have plenty to offer.
As always, our RV adventures are about more than just the destinations; they’re about the people, the stories, and the memories we make along the way. This trip was no exception, and we can’t wait to return to this beautiful part of Illinois. Have you ever been to Rock Falls, Sterling, or Dixon? What were your highlights? Let us know—we love adding to our travel bucket list!
